Kids 12 and under will soon need a PRESTO card if they want to continue to ride for free on Oakville Transit.

Beginning March 1, kids can ride the bus for free by tapping on board with a PRESTO card or by travelling with a parent/guardian.

“This change to the program will allow older children who may be travelling on their own to continue to take transit for free,” said Oakville Transit.

The Town first introduced the kids 12 and under ride free program in March of 2021.

Oakville Council has been looking at ways to increase ridership to its pre-pandemic levels and had proposed a 2023 pilot of free transit for youth and seniors.

Oakville Transit is offering a limited number of PRESTO cards for free until Tuesday, Feb. 28 (or until quantities last).

The cards will be available at Oakville Transit, located at 430 Wyecroft Rd., Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed on Family Day, Feb. 20) and at the Town Hall Service Oakville counter, located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd., Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed on Family Day, Feb. 20).

Proof of age, such as a birthday certificate, is required.

PRESTO cards are also available for a $6 one-time issuing fee at prestocard.ca (allow 7-10 business days for delivery) or at any authorized PRESTO agent.
