KFC founder Colonel Sanders’ former home listed for sale in Mississauga

The former home of Colonel Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, is listed for sale in Mississauga.

Harland David Sanders, born on September 9, 1890, in Henryville, Indiana, lived in Mississauga at the end of his life.

Saunders held several different occupations before he began franchising his fried chicken business in 1952.

Now known as KFC, the business rapidly expanded across North America. In 1964, with more than 600 franchised outlets, Sanders sold his interest in the company to a group of investors.

The initial deal did not include the Canadian operations, and in 1965, Sanders moved to Mississauga to oversee his Canadian franchises. He lived in a bungalow at 1337 Melton Dr. from 1965 until his death in a Louisville, Kentucky hospital in 1980.

He lived in the modest bungalow with his wife Claudia part of the year, and continued to travel North America in his signature white suits, according to Visit Mississauga.

Sanders channelled the earnings from his growing Canadian business into the Harland Sanders Charitable Organization, a registered Canadian charity that continues to carry on the Colonel’s legacy.

His modest Mississauga bungalow, near Dixie Road and The Queensway, was listed for sale last week for $1,499,999.

The four-level side split offers over 2,000 square feet of finished living space with four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, according to the listing from Meta Realty Inc.

The home has changed since Sanders lived there. An addition to the home was completed in 2014, partially designed by Jane Lockhart.

Additional upgrades include carpet-free interior, central vacuum, a backup generator, electrical sliding back doors and two fireplaces, the listing notes.

Home features include an open-concept kitchen, a main-floor primary bedroom with an ensuite bathroom (with skylight and heated flooring), and a large recreation room in the basement.
