Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Housing Minister Sean Fraser are expected to make an announcement that could be good news for the Brampton housing market.

Fraser said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, will be in Brampton to make an announcement on Friday (Oct. 20) 10:30 a.m. and, according to the Prime Minister’s itinerary, Trudeau will be making “a housing announcement” along with Fraser and Brampton MP Kamal Khera.

Details on the upcoming announcement are light, but it could be tied to the city’s recent changes to its Housing Accelerator Fund application – a $4 billion program announced last year to assist municipalities with increasing housing supply and promoting development.

London was the first municipality to get approval under the program for $74 million, and Brampton is looking to unlock some $114 million dollars to jump-start Brampton’s housing market.

Applications opened in July for the program, and a letter from Fraser sent to city council last month requested tweaks to Brampton’s application and strategy before moving forward.

Those changes include doubling the radius of four-storey buildings within support corridors from 400 metres to 800 metres; reducing restrictions on additional residential units (ARUs) from 35 square metres to at least 100 square metres; and increasing the number of as-of-right developments from three to four.

The announcement is expected at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
