July 2 weather: It will feel like 44 C with thunderstorms across southern Ontario

Hot and humid conditions will grip southern Ontario on Thursday as temperatures soar into the mid-30s.

While much of the day will feature sunshine and a mix of sun and cloud, the afternoon could bring scattered showers and the risk of thunderstorms across the region.

Early risers hoping to catch a colourful sunrise while enjoying their favourite warm beverage will have a good start to the day, as Thursday’s 5:36 a.m. sunrise arrives under mostly sunny skies before clouds move in later in the morning.

Mississauga, Brampton, Halton and Durham will begin the day with sunshine before clouds roll in. There is a 40 per cent chance of rain in the afternoon, along with the risk of a thunderstorm. Highs will reach 35 C with a humidex of 44 as winds strengthen to 30 km/h, gusting to 50.

Hamilton will see similar conditions, with sunshine giving way to a mix of sun and clouds and a 40 per cent chance of afternoon showers. Temperatures will climb to 34 C with a humidex of 43 as winds increase to 40 km/h.

The UV index will be very high at 10 in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and Durham, while Halton will see a UV index of 9.

Environment Canada recommends taking precautions when the UV index reaches 3 or higher, including wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and protective clothing, and limiting prolonged sun exposure during peak afternoon hours.

Sunset begins at 9:03 p.m.

By evening, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, Hamilton and Durham will see partly cloudy skies with a 40 per cent chance of showers and the risk of a thunderstorm before clearing overnight. Overnight lows will range between 22 C and 23 C.
