July 14 weather: Heat warnings with high that feels like 45 C in southern Ontario

A yellow heat warning has been issued for the Greater Toronto Area and southern Ontario with a high that could feel as hot as 45 C expected.

Environment Canada says the morning will be sunny with a 20 km/h west wind hitting up to 40 km/h in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and Niagara Falls.

Gusts could hit up to 50 km/h in Oshawa and Pickering, the weather agency says.

The daytime high will be around 37 C in Mississauga but could feel like 45 C due to the humidity. The UV index will be 9 or “very high.”

The heatwave is expected to stretch into Wednesday or Thursday evening, and the weather agency says to watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others, including headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue.

“Drink water often and before you feel thirsty to replace fluids,” the warning reads. “Close blinds, or shades and open windows if outside is cooler than inside.”

If your living space is hot, move to a cool public space such as a cooling centre, community centre, library or shaded park.

Environment Canada says never to leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle, and to double-check before locking vehicles to make sure no one is left behind.

Tuesday night is expected to bring clear skies to the GTA with 20 km/h winds dying down around midnight. The overnight low will be around 25 C.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, expect similar conditions with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 32 C before accounting for the humidity. The evening will be partly cloudy with a low of 19 C.
