Interesting in working at Whitby’s newest sports complex?
The town is hiring for more than 85 jobs at the Fieldgate Sports Complex that is scheduled open on Baldwin Street, just south of Highway 407 and the Brooklin community, this summer.
Job openings include part-time and full-time staff to support the new facility in lifeguard, recreation program, facility operations and customer service roles. The new staff will help to bring Whitby’s largest recreation complex to life while creating “meaningful” local employment opportunities, said Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy.
“The Fieldgate Sports Complex will be a place where residents come together to play, stay active, and connect. As we prepare to open this new facility, we’re proud to be creating local job opportunities and inviting residents – including young people entering the workforce – to be part of the opening team.”
Fieldgate Sports Complex is a state-of-the-art facility that will feature Durham Region’s largest pool, a twin pad arena, multi-purpose gymnasium, wellness studio, three-lane walking track, meeting rooms and arts and cultural spaces.
Fieldgate Homes paid $1.5 million over ten years for the naming rights, while Roybrook Field will be the name of the outdoor sports field at the complex in recognition of the donation of land by Roy Ormiston. Whitby Council also agreed “in perpetuity” to name a multipurpose room the ‘Mitchell Room’ in recognition for former mayor Don Mitchell and his family’s history of the land on which the facility is built.
Revenue from the latter agreement would be $50,000.
The facility is being built with a vision to create a multi-purpose gathering space for inclusive sport and community programming – a place for residents of all ages and abilities to connect, play and get active.
The complex will incorporate features to help visitors navigate easily, including wheelchair ramps, slip-resistant floor finishes, widened automated doorways, ramp access in swimming pools and barrier-free signage. There will also be gender-neutral and universal washrooms and change rooms.
The outdoor park neighbouring the facility is planned to include pickleball, tennis and basketball courts, a multi-purpose sports field and a playground, as well as a skatepark and pump track.
Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy called the facility a “significant milestone” for the town at the groundbreaking.
“We heard loud and clear that people want a flexible and connected design with lots of outdoor, aquatics, and gymnasium space. That’s exactly what this site will deliver, helping to ensure that we can meet the recreational needs of our growing community for years to come.”
The playground features a variety of play structures designed for children of all ages and abilities, including engineered wood fibre playground surfacing, accessible junior and senior play structures, inclusive swings, seating/picnic areas, shade structures, shade trees, and more.
The complex will also include an Indigenous art installation.
“Facilities like this depend on the people who bring them to life every day,” said Matt Gaskell, the town’s Chief Administrative Officer. “From lifeguards and aquatics staff to customer service and facility operations, we’re building a team that will deliver exceptional recreation experiences for residents from day one.”
