Tory Lanez hasn’t forgotten his roots.

Currently serving a 10-year prison sentence in California for shooting singer Megan Thee Stallion, the Brampton-born Lanez has stayed busy recording a new album and taking to social media to give his thoughts on matters about politics and reputation.

A post Wednesday on his Instagram feed had his attention turned to home when he suggested Peel Region get out from the shadow of Toronto and find its own nickname.

“Toronto is referred to as the ‘6’ because of the 416 area code,” the post reads. “I think it’s fair, that from this day forward, Brampton, Mississauga and anything with the 905 & 289 area code should be considered as and called ‘9’.”

He goes on to say: “I think everyone can agree Peel is NOT the Dot … It’s only right we separate for the world’s understanding.”

Lanez then signs off with “#9Side”.

Born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, Lanez attended Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School on Chinguacousy Road in Brampton, but has had a well-travelled life living in various parts of the U.S. before returning to Toronto and eventually making his mark by releasing a series of acclaimed mixtapes. His breakthrough came in 2015 with his Say It single which reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Things were mostly on the upswing for Lanez until the 2020 incident with Megan Thee Stallion. Lanez was found guilty of first-degree assault with a firearm, discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and having a concealed firearm in a vehicle for shooting her in the foot during a dispute in a car on the way home from a party in Hollywood.

Being incarcerated in a California prison hasn’t dampened his creative energies as Lanez was able to record a new album called Peterson, to be released Friday.
