The news first came out yesterday, now the Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have made it official: Billionaire Mark Cuban has joined the club as part of the ownership group.

A former owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and member of the award-winning TV show Shark Tank, Cuban’s stake in the team has not been disclosed, but the Honey Badgers hope his involvement will raise the profile of both the franchise and the league.

Cuban’s connection to the organization comes through longstanding business relationships with majority owner Leonard Asper and CEO Al Whitley, who spent more than two decades working for the Mavericks.

The high-profile investor also pointed to Canada’s growing influence on the global basketball stage as a key reason for joining the team.

“Canadian basketball is probably the most underappreciated in the world,” said Cuban. “The talent here is through the roof and getting better by the day. The CEBL offers all of Canada the chance to see that amazing talent on display in exciting games that are fun and affordable for the entire family. I’m excited to be part of this team, help build the Brampton fanbase, and to bring some of the same fun we had in Dallas to the Toronto area.”

He added that he hopes to help grow the Honey Badgers fanbase while bringing some of the energy and entertainment that helped make the Mavericks successful in Dallas.

Asper said Cuban’s basketball experience and winning culture will be a major asset for the organization.

“I am thrilled that Mark has decided to formally join me on this journey,” Asper said.

The move comes as the Honey Badgers continue efforts to build momentum heading into the new season. In recent weeks, the team has added Nav Bhatia — widely known as the “Raptors Superfan” — as a community ambassador in an effort to boost local engagement.

The 2026 roster is also expected to feature several hometown players, including Matthew Moncrieffe, Bronson Chambers and Danilo Djuricic.

Brampton opens the 2026 season on May 15 against the before facing the on May 17. The team plays its home games at CAA Centre.

The CEBL season runs from May through August, with the Honey Badgers among the league’s original franchises.
