Italian tour to ‘strengthen ties,’ on the horizon for Hamilton Mayor

In an attempt to foster better relationships with Italy, Mayor Andrea Horwath along with the city’s community partners will be visiting Racalmuto, Abruzzo, Palermo, and Rome from 3-14 July.

“Members of the Sicilian Cultural Society of Hamilton Inc., Festa del Monte Hamilton, and Fratellanza Racalmutese committees and dignitaries from Italian sister cities in Belgium will be present, adding further diversity to the delegation,” according to the City of Hamilton.

During the mission, the they will  have meetings with senior Italian government officials, explore key Italian cultural areas, and participate in numerous one-on-one meetings.

“Italy has remained one of Hamilton’s closest international friendships for over 30 years.”

“It is a privilege to be part of this delegation celebrating our twin cities and the upcoming ceremony of Maria SS del Monte on behalf the City of Hamilton. I look forward to strengthening our relationship through cultural exchanges to further collaboration, trade and development,” the Mayor said in a press release.

Racalmuto, Sicily, became the first Italian city to establish a twinning relationship with the City of Hamilton,

Today, over 25,000 Hamilton residents have ancestral roots in Racalmuto, with a section of Murray St. W., in Ward 2 known as ‘Corso Racalmuto,’ paying homage to the Racalmutesi.
