Is a high-speed Toronto-Niagara boat service coming to Lake Ontario?

Reports indicate a plan to link Toronto and Niagara through a high-speed shuttle on Lake Ontario is back on the table.

Originally proposed before the pandemic, interested parties have resurrected the project through a submission to Toronto city hall.

Although in the early stages of development, the plan promises to bring tourists to-and-from Toronto and Niagara in an easy to use system that could eclipse the time honoured method of traveling along the QEW by car.

The service would use a high-speed catamaran that could hold anywhere between 25 to 50 passengers. Travel time between the two points would be approximately one hour with little chance of traffic jams.

A source with knowledge of the proposal said usage would strictly be for tourism with leisurely scheduled departure times.

“This wouldn’t be for those looking to get to work,” the source said adding the Niagara stop would likely be near Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Original plans called for stops along the way in Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington but the new proposal suggest the run will just be just between Toronto and Niagara.

There is no timeframe on when the shuttle would be again but optimists suggest the summer of 2023.
