Provincial officials investigating the death of a Brampton teenager in April are asking for any witnesses to come forward.

The 19-year-old ended up dying in hospital after a transaction with two off-duty Toronto police officers went wrong.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, which handles cases involving the conduct of police officers that result in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person, the two Toronto officers chased down the man after discovering they had purchased a counterfeit item.

After the altercation, the Brampton man was taken to hospital by friends, where he died.

SIU investigators are asking for any witnesses to the altercation, which occurred Monday, April 26, on Bellchase Trail, near the Duncan Foster Valley South greenspace, to come forward.

Specifically, they are appealing to the driver and/or passengers of a light-coloured SUV they believe was in the area.

The SIU is neither revealing the identity of the victim nor the cause of death.

Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-787-8529. Video of the incident can be uploaded at the SIU’s website.
