International Workers Can Now Come to Canada Faster
Permit processing times can be lengthy, but now, high-skilled workers and Canadian employers have faster processing times for work permits!
First, high-skilled workers coming to Canada on a temporary basis are now able to benefit from two-week processing of applications for work permits and, when necessary, temporary resident visas.
Eligible workers are allowed one 15-day work permit-exempt stay in Canada every six months, or one 30-day work permit-exempt stay every 12 months.
Further, high-skilled workers who need to come to Canada for a very short-term assignment and researchers taking part in short-duration research projects being conducted in Canada will not require a work permit at all.
Certain researchers will be allowed a permit-free standard of 120 days in Canada every 12 months.
“The Global Skills Strategy will allow Canadian employers, who are investing in people and skills here in Canada, to continue to grow by attracting top talent from around the world," said Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development. "Whether it’s developing a new product line or leading a new sales team, bringing in the best and the brightest from around the world will result in more good-quality, middle-class jobs for Canadians.”
Hopefully, these developments will allow faster entry of top talent with specialized skill sets and global experience to Canada to help innovative companies create jobs for Canadians.
Open work permits for spouses and study permits for dependants will also be processed within two weeks when applicable.
Employers might benefit from having access to global talent with specialized skills, while job seekers might benefit from having access to more jobs.
Moreover, a more efficient process to bring in global talent might help Canadian industries stay competitive in the global marketplace and expand the Canadian workforce.
Companies applying for workers through the Global Talent Stream now have access to a new streamlined process that provides eligible employers with priority processing of applications and a client-focused service for the development of the Labour Market Benefits Plan, with a service standard of 10 business days, and flexible recruitment requirements.
The Global Skills Strategy was first announced in November 2016 to promote global investment in Canada.
