A man has been charged in connection with two carjackings, one of which quickly unfolded after the victim’s vehicle was intentionally rear-ended on a busy street in Toronto.
That incident, according to Toronto Police, took place last Aug. 13 just after midnight in the area of Keele Street and Wilson Avenue. The stolen car was found in Mississauga just over one month later, on Sept. 22.
Police said two men in a car travelling behind the victim purposely bumped into the vehicle ahead of them. After the two cars stopped, the men confronted the victim “with a weapon and demanded the keys” before fleeing the area with the stolen car, according to investigators.
On Jan. 5 of this year, at about 7:45 a.m., a person stepped out of their running vehicle near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue West before a man quickly jumped into the car and sped away, police said.
The vehicle was located in Toronto by police on Jan. 18.
Last Tuesday, investigators made one arrest in connection with the two carjackings.
Husnain Javed, 19, of Toronto, is charged with two counts of possession of property obtained by crime. He made his first court appearance last Wednesday in Toronto.
Such bump-and-grab carjackings are a common way crooks have been stealing vehicles for many years. However, they and all types of carjackings are on the dramatic rise the last couple of years, according to police.
In one incident in which a Mississauga man has been charged, four masked culprits intentionally bumped into a vehicle before stealing it last Dec. 15 at about 3 a.m. in the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Consumer Road in Toronto, just north of Highway 401.
