Seven years after a Mississauga man was shot and killed during an altercation with police, an inquest has been called into his death.
It was one March 20, 2015 that Marc Boekwa Diza Ekamba, 22, died after being hit by a volley of bullets fired by Peel Regional Police officers on Queen Federica Dr.
Further investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) determined the police action was justified as Ekamba was advancing on police with a knife and would not surrender.
The inquest, called by Dr. Kenneth Peckham, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Central West Office, will examine the circumstances surround Ekamba’s death.
An inquest is a public hearing designed to focus public attention on the circumstances of death through an objective examination of facts. At the conclusion of an inquest, the five-person jury often makes useful recommendations that may prevent further deaths.
The inquest is expected to last nine days and hear from approximately 20 witnesses.
The inquest will start at 10 a.m. on May 16. Dr. David Eden will preside as inquest officer. Julian Roy and Richard Garwood-Jones will be the inquest counsel.
The inquest will be conducted by video conference. Members of the public who wish to view the proceedings can do so live at www.youtube.com/occinquests.
