Pearson Airport in Mississauga

Some neighbourhoods in Mississauga and Brampton can expect an increase in air traffic noise for the next several months.

In April, Pearson Airport will temporarily close its east/west runway (known as 06L/24R) for repairs that will last until the fall. The runway is the second busiest at the airport.

“We are working in close partnership with our industry partners and construction contractor to deliver a project that minimizes impacts,” a statement released by the airport indicates. “Despite these efforts, communities near the airport, including those who typically have fewer aircraft overhead, can expect more aircraft noise during the project.”

It’s anticipated the work will force more airplane traffic into communities north, northeast, south and southwest of Pearson in the early stages of the project.

From June to mid-September the flight increase will shift to areas directly north and south of the airport. From mid-September to November the increase again will be felt to the north, northeast, south and southwest.

The repair project is planned to be the largest in the airport’s history as it corrects the wear that has occurred on the 3-km stretch of runway that was built in the 1960s. The completed work is expected to extend the runway’s life by 30 years.

A public meeting is planned for April 7 to discuss the work and the impact on neighbouring communities.
