Residents should watch out for this circulating text scam, particularly those who make or receive payments via Interac e-Transfer.
The text message alerts the recipient that a sum of money has been sent to their account, then prompts them to reply for more details.
It looks like this:
The text is a scam, attempting to steal your personal or financial information.
“When you receive a money transfer, always read the message carefully,” Interac advises.
Additionally, if an eTransfer message appears to be sent by someone you know, Interac advises you contact the sender directly to verify that it’s legitimate.
“A quick text message or phone call can save you from serious financial peril.”
Residents should be careful not to respond to scams such as the one above, as even a simply reply can signal to scammers that your number is active.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, which keeps track of major scams and fraud throughout the country, advises residents to never share any personal information with unverified people or groups.
That includes information such as your name, address, birth date, social insurance number, and credit card or banking information.
