An express bus serving thousands of passengers in Mississauga’s north end will run more frequently starting in the new year in response to growing rider demand, city transit officials say.
Effective Jan. 5, MiWay’s Route 109 Meadowvale Express will offer more frequent service both throughout the week and on weekends.
Service improvements on that route include:
- Weekdays: new service frequency of 15 minutes or better during core hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (currently up to 20 minutes) and 20 minutes or better during evening hours of 6 to 10 p.m. (currently up to 25 minutes).
- Weekend: new service frequency of 20 minutes during core hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. (currently up to 32 minutes).
Those service upgrades are among several planned for various routes beginning the first full week of January, officials at MiWay, the city’s public transit provider, said in an update this week.
Route 35 Eglinton will be adjusted to service Eglinton Avenue in both directions, the local transit agency said, adding the end result will be improved connectivity to Ridgeway Plaza in Mississauga’s west end.
That route “will now provide consistent eastbound and westbound service along Eglinton Avenue and Ninth Line near Ridgeway Plaza with the addition of three new eastbound bus stops,” MiWay said. “The current Eglinton Avenue routing only provides westbound service between Ninth Line and Ridgeway Drive with eastbound service provided via Erin Centre Boulevard and Tenth Line.”
The transit provider noted that change “will cease eastbound Route 35 Eglinton service to stops along Erin Centre Boulevard and Tenth Line, and customers travelling within the area are encouraged to ride the new Route 35 Eglinton with a short walk to the new stops (or use existing stop #3518) or take Route 9 Rathburn or Route 46 Tenth Line.”
Additionally starting in January, routes 26 Burnhamthorpe and 61 Mavis will offer improved service on weekdays and several other routes will feature adjusted schedules as well.
Due to increased customer demand and to address overcrowding, MiWay said the following routes will offer more frequent service on weekdays:
- 26 Burnhamthorpe: from 16 minutes to 15 minutes between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- 61 Mavis: from 16 minutes to 14 minutes between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Schedule adjustments will be made on the following routes, according to MiWay, to improve service reliability as traffic and ridership patterns continue to evolve throughout the city:
- 18 Derry (weekdays)
- 42 Derry (weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays)
- 48 Erin Mills (weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays)
- 71 Sheridan (weekdays)
MiWay officials added the transit agency will make further schedule adjustments as needed to “ensure services remain responsive to customer needs.”
