Impaired charges laid after police cruiser t-boned by G1 driver in Audi in Pickering, Ontario

An Oshawa man is facing impaired driving, leaving the scene of an accident and nine other charges after a police cruiser was t-boned at a Pickering intersection early Wednesday morning.

Two cruisers on the way to a call for service just after 3 a.m. were turning left onto Kingston Road from Whites Road when a person operating an eastbound Audi SUV allegedly failed to stop at a red light, and after slamming on the brakes and narrowly missing the first police car, continued through the intersection at a “high rate of speed” and crashed into the second cruiser.

The driver of the Audi then tried to flee on foot, police said, but officers found him and took him into custody.

The officer in the car that was t-boned was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Alberto-Marius Renghea, 24, was charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to render assistance at an accident, failing to stop for a red light, refusing a breathalyzer and several other driving offences after he was found to be operating the Audi with a G1 licence.

He was released on an undertaking.
