Police have charged a 37-year-old Brampton man with the murder of his wife after a woman was found dead earlier this week.

Peel Regional Police say officers were called to the area of Plentywood Drive and Financial Drive in Brampton shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Monday (Oct. 2).

When officers arrived on the scene they found the body of 46-year-old Brampton woman Raina Badran. Police have not disclosed how the victim died but said her body was found “with apparent signs of trauma.”

A 37-year-old man from Brampton was arrested and charged with second-degree murder on Monday, and police say the accused was the victim’s husband.

Peel Regional Police have charged Basel Mohammad, 37, of Brampton with one count of second-degree murder.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Back in June, the City of Brampton declared a gender-based and intimate partner violence epidemic following the alleged killing of Brampton woman Davinder Kaur was recorded and posted online.

The high-profile murder brought concerns about the growing number of gender-based violence incidents to the forefront and renewed calls to see Canada add femicide to the criminal code.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information about the homicide to contact investigators by calling 905-453-2121 ext. 3205. Anonymous tips may also be submitted by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
