The Hunchback of Notre Dame musical has hit the Meadowvale Theatre in Mississauga.

The musical, which is being presented by City Centre Musical Productions and The Encore Series, is based on the novel by Victor Hugo. Author Peter Parnell’s new book “embraces story theatre” and features passages from Hugo’s gothic novel.

Along with iconic songs from the Disney animated film, the show will also feature new songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.

The musical begins with the bells of Notre Dame chiming through the cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. The story features a deformed bell-ringer named Quasimodo, who is held captive by his caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo.

Observing the city, Quasimodo escapes and joins the crowd to revel in the Feast of Fools.

During his escape, members of the crowd treat him cruelly with the exception of a Roma woman (that’s referred to as a gypsy in the play) named Esmeralda.

As a result, Quasimodo vies for Esmeralda’s attention along with Captain Phoebus and Frollo.

Frollo then embarks on a mission to destroy the Roma women and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.

The show hits the Meadowvale Theatre today (Mar. 3) and will be on until Mar. 12, 2023, and tickets start at $32.
