Changes are coming to Highway 407 ETR in the new year.

Tolls and fees are increasing, while new toll zones and vehicle classifications are being introduced.

Officials said the changes will be taking effect on Jan. 1.

It appears that the highway, which is used by more than three million people each week, will get more expensive to use.

For light vehicles, tolls will increase by three to 14 cents per kilometre, depending on the time of day and zone travelled, officials said.

The camera charge, account fee and transponder lease fee will also be increasing for the first time in five years.

The annual transponder fee will be increasing to $29.50 plus tax, which is up from $24.50. The annual fee for each additional transponder on the same account will be $11.95, up from $9.95.

Transponders eliminate camera charges and account fees.

“With the adjustment to tolls and fees, the majority of personal transponder customers can expect a monthly bill increase of about $8,” officials said.

That’s $96 more per year.

Of course, it will vary from person to person, depending on when, where and how often they take the 407 ETR.

The 407 ETR currently has four zones across its 108-kilometre stretch — that will change to 12 in the new year.

“This allows 407 ETR to set different toll rates for each zone to better manage traffic volumes and flow,” officials said.

Motorcycles and medium-sized vehicles will also fall under a new classification to “better reflect a vehicle’s impact on the road.”

“For example, motorcycles will pay less than sedans and SUVs; while larger trucks, vans, and SUVs towing trailers, will pay more,” officials said.

Meanwhile, 407 ETR will be offering promotional driving offers in 2025 targeting more than a million customers, which officials said is to alleviate congestion on other routes when they’re busiest.

“This program is expected to boost peak morning and afternoon traffic, while giving the average enrolled customer almost $50 in credits per month,” officials said.

To be eligible for an offer, customers must be registered with “My Account” and have a current email address on it.

A relief program was also recently launched for low-income drivers and families which offers up to six free trips per month for eligible customers who meet Statistics Canada’s low-income threshold.
