How Much Does it Cost to Live in the Halton Region?

It’s no secret that the cost of living is rising in a lot of Canadian cities and towns.

In a recent InHalton article, we looked at the fluctuation of condo and house prices in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
In this article, we shared some good and bad news. The good news is that house prices have dropped year-over-year.
The bad news?

They did not drop much and are expected to rise.
Now, in addition to home and condo prices, let’s look other factors that have an impact on the cost of living in Halton.
The data and numbers that follow are from a NUMBEO report that was most recently updated earlier this month. Some data is estimated due to a small number of contributors.
Housing:
Let’s first take a look at how much the average Oakville resident makes a month after taxes. Approximately $4,333.33, something to think about while we’re exploring the different living expenses.
To rent a one-bedroom apartment in Town Centre it will cost about $1,662.50 per month, to rent a one-bedroom apartment outside of the Town Centre the price drops a bit to $1,366.67. For three-bedroom apartments the price dramatically increases, in the Town Centre it’ll cost about $2,300.00 and outside of the Town Centre it will cost approximately $2,050.00. These rent prices are all on a per-month basis.
How much does it cost to buy an apartment in the Town of Oakville? In the Town Centre it will be about $3.939.59 per square meter, and outside of the Town Centre this number increases to $4,036.47 per square meter.
Transportation:
The cost of transportation can play a huge role when it comes to deciding where to live.
In Oakville gas is approximately $1.21 per litre, a one-way bus ticket is $3.75, and a monthly bus pass is $142.50.
Childcare:
For private preschool (or Kindergarten), and full-day school, it will cost $950.00 per month for one child, this works out to be $9,500.00 per year excluding the summer months.
International primary school for one child will cost about $16,000.00 per year.
Restaurants:
It’s always nice to go out for a meal every once and awhile. In Oakville at an inexpensive restaurant it’ll cost about $15, and at a mid-range restaurant it will cost about $62.50 for two. Imported beer will cost about $7.00 while domestic beer will only cost about $5.50.
Leisure and Sports:
Similar to eating out, it’s also nice to treat yourself to a movie every once and a while and work on your health.
A movie ticket in Oakville costs around $13.50 and gym membership in the Town of Oakville will cost about $45.74 per month.
Housing:
On average, the monthly net salary before taxes for a Burlington resident is $3,454.67.
The cost per month to rent a one-bedroom apartment in the City Centre is about $1,443.33, and the same apartment style outside of the City Centre will cost $1,290.00. A three-bedroom apartment in the City Centre will cost about $1,950.00 per month to rent, and outside of the City Centre to rent a three-bedroom apartment would cost you $1,681.67.
The cost of buying an apartment in the City of Burlington is slightly higher then Oakville. To buy an apartment in the City Centre, it will cost approximately $5,938.09 per square meter, and outside the City Centre it would cost about $5,626.58 per square meter.
Transportation:
A one-way bus ticket in Burlington will cost about $3.50, slightly less expensive than Oakville, a monthly pass would cost about $97.00 which is significantly more affordable then Oakville.
The price of gas per litre is the same as Oakville, $1.21.
Childcare:
For private preschool (or Kindergarten), and full-day school, it will cost $1,000.00 per month for one child, this works out to be $10,000.00 per year excluding the summer months.
International primary school for one child will cost about $16,000.00 per year.
Restaurants:
Eating at an inexpensive restaurant in Burlington will cost about $15, and for two people to eat a mid-range restaurant you’re looking at a price of about $65.00. Imported beer costs about $6.50 and domestic beer costs around $5.50.
Leisure and Sports:
A monthly gym membership in Burlington costs about $42.50.
To see a movie in Burlington, a ticket will cost you about $12.50.
Housing:
Before taxes, the average monthly net salary for a Milton resident is $5,124.00.
To rent a one-bedroom apartment in the Town Centre it will cost about $1,258.33, outside of the Town Centre will cost approximately $1,033.33. A three-bedroom apartment in the Town Centre will cost about $1,725.00 while outside of the Town Centre this apartment type would typically cost about $1,450.00.
To buy an apartment in the Town Centre would cost around $4,118.06 and outside of the Town Centre an apartment would cost about $3,200.00 per square meter.
Transportation:
Transportation costs in Milton are slightly lower then Oakville and Burlington, a one-way bus ticket will cost $3.25 and a monthly pass will cost about $57.00.
However, gas per litre is slightly more expensive at $1.24.
Childcare:
For private preschool (or Kindergarten), and full-day school, it will cost $1,016.67 per month for one child, this works out to be $10, 166.70 per year excluding the summer months.
International primary school for one child will cost about $6,000.00 per year.
Restaurants:
To eat at an inexpensive restaurant in Milton, you’re looking at $20.00, while at a mid-range restaurant will costs about $52.50 for two people to dine.
Imported beer in Milton costs about $7.00 while domestic beer costs about $6.00.
Leisure and Sports:
A monthly gym membership in Milton is significantly more expensive than in Oakville or Burlington at $65.00.
A movie ticket in Milton will cost you about $12.00.
