Oakville wants to give housebound voters a chance to cast their ballots in next year’s municipal election.

Town council will consider a plan next week that if approved, will let election officials bring ballots directly to the homes of those who have mobility or other health issues and cannot go to polling stations.

Under the “home visit program” the eligible voters will be able to mark their ballots in their own household during the next civic elections. The ballots would then be returned by officials to the proper location where they will be counted.

Town staff indicate the cost to carrying out the program will be minimal be absorbed by existing budgets.

A pilot home visit program was introduced in 2018 and proved to be successful which has led to the idea to make the plan permanent and in time for the October 24, 2022 elections.
