A local lad done good and now showcasing his country and his home town on the world sporting stage is being honoured tonight in the lead up to Canada’s second match in the 2026 World Cup.

Derek Cornelius, a born-and-raised Ajacian and starting centre back with Canada’s Men’s National Soccer Team, will be celebrated at the re-named ‘Derek Cornelius Square’ Thursday evening as he and his teammates prepare to play Qatar in Vancouver in what could be considered a ‘must-win’ game in the tournament.

The community is then invited to a free watch party in the downtown square immediately following the ceremony to watch the game.

Ajax Council voted on June 16 to temporarily rename Pat Bayly Square for the tournament. The 5:30 p.m. ceremony at 55 Bayly Street features formal remarks, the unveiling of a new chalk mural renaming the square, and a video message from Cornelius. His sister, Alyssa Stewart, will accept on the family’s behalf before the big-screen watch party.

“Derek Cornelius’ journey from Ajax to the international stage is an incredible source of pride for our community,” said Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier. “Renaming this space in his honour celebrates not only his achievements, but also the dedication, perseverance and hometown spirit he represents. We’re excited to bring residents and visitors together at Derek Cornelius Square to cheer on Team Canada and celebrate this historic moment.”

For GTA fans, the renamed Derek Cornelius Square is a place to watch Canada close to home. Matchday screenings tonight and on June 24 in Canada’s final group stage game against Switzerland are free, open to all and an opportunity to take in the action on the big screen alongside fellow fans.

Medallion built the square as a place for the community to gather — and this week it becomes exactly that, as the town comes together to cheer one of its own on the world’s stage, said Medallion Regional Property Manager Yvonne Yorke.

“When Medallion built Pat Bayly Square, we hoped it would become a hub for our residents and the residents of Ajax to gather,” she said. “Seeing the community come together to cheer on Derek is exactly what we hoped for. We’re proud to present free events so families can celebrate close to home.”

Last week, Cornelius, who has seen his career take him around the world from the Vancouver Whitecaps to French giants Marseille and Scottish power Glasgow Rangers, debuted a video message for hometown fans at the Ajax Fan Zone party for the Canada vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina match.

The Ajax Fan Zone watch parties are family-friendly, with entertainment, kids’ activities and local food vendors. They will also be BYOCC – bring your own chair and cheer.

Public parking is available at the parking garage at 73 Bayly Street (enter off Kitney Drive). More details are available at ajax.ca/ExperienceAjax.
