Mississauga homeowners warned of noisy spring

The sound of chainsaws, woodchippers and trucks coming and going will be ringing in the ears of those who live in sections of south Mississauga this spring.

As part of the plan to clear out unruly trees and bush along the Lakeshore GO Train corridor, the landscaping work will begin April 1 and continue for three months along the tracks.

The plan is to redesign the vegetation for controlled growth to accommodate the expansion of the GO rail line that will ultimately see the building of new tracks and accompanying infrastructure.

Metrolinx, the agency that manages public transportation in the Greater Toronto Area, indicates the work will largely be concentrated between Lorne Park Rd. and Winston Churchill Blvd. at this stage of the project.

“Ongoing vegetation control inside rail corridors is essential to operating safe and reliable GO train service,” reads a Metrolinx bulletin recently sent out to households near the Lakeshore line in south Mississauga. “Go expansion requires an enhanced approach for trees and vegetation to create room for and protest new infrastructure, to optimize corridor safety.”

Crews will be on the job between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, but some weekend work is a possibility, according to Metrolinx.

For years the vegetation along the tracks has caused concern for some neighbouring residents who complained of that the unruliness led to constant cutting and maintenance. Metrolinx says the controlled growth plan will eliminate the frequency and intrusiveness of maintenance.

As well, Metrolinx says the overall project will bring efficiency to the GO transportation service as it will allow for faster trains and more frequent service.
