A homeless encampment on Achilles Road in Ajax is “deeply concerning” to Durham Region officials as the rapid growth of the unhoused continues to spiral beyond the region and the town’s capabilities to handle them.
The Region of Durham said in a statement it does not endorse encampments, but recent Ontario case law recognizes they are a “reality” when shelter space is unavailable.
As of August, 200 people were on the By-Name List in Ajax seeking supports to change their housing status and the region said they were “working urgently” to open indoor spaces across Durham.
The homeless situation has continued to worsen since the pandemic and was further exacerbated in 2023 when the town received an influx of refugees with no place to house them.
“The encampment on regional property on Achilles Road in Ajax represents a critical situation requiring urgent action.”
There will be temporary interim supports over coming weeks at Achilles Road. If you have new or gently used, clean items to donate contact [email protected] or call 311 ext. 5510. Regional and community partner organization will distribute essentials like coats and boots.
Donations are not permitted at encampments
“Durham Region remains committed to expanding housing options and providing compassionate, practical support for residents experiencing homelessness. We thank the community for supporting safe, effective solutions for everyone.”
