CALGARY — A driver who accidentally ran over a Calgary police officer who died in a hit and run broke down in tears at a first-degree murder trial today.

Sgt. Andrew Harnett died in hospital on Dec. 31, 2020, after scuffling with the driver of a fleeing SUV and falling into the path of an oncoming car.

The fleeing vehicle’s alleged driver, who was 17 at the time, is on trial in Harnett’s death.

Mackson Ogunsanya testified he saw a speeding SUV coming toward him and saw something fall toward him.

He said he immediately stopped and realized he had hit a police officer.

Ogunsanya says other officers showed up and told him to wait in his car.

He says he was shaking and started crying when he realized he might have killed someone.
