Immunity can be achieved by inhaling small does of COVID-19: Hamilton researchers

Researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton developed a model that suggests we can reach high levels of COVID-19 immunity through "variolation."

COVID-19 numbers continue to rise in Durham Region with the incidence rate, positivity rate and number of new cases up dramatically from a week ago.

The incidence rate per 100,000 jumped to 37.9 from 29, the positivity rate went from 7.6 per cent to 10.1 per cent and total number of new cases spiked from 213 (June 19-25) to 278 (June 26-July 2).

Hospitalizations also rose, from 12 to 22, with the number of patients in ICU remaining constant at two. On the bright side, there were no new deaths reported in Durham for the first time in several weeks.

Institutional outbreaks rose slightly, from six to eight, with one of the new outbreaks at Hillside Estates in Oshawa; its 17th since the pandemic was first declared just over two years ago. The long-term care home lost eight residents to a deadly outbreak in the fall of 2021.
