Highway lanes closed after driver goes for ‘quite the ride’ on Mississauga-Brampton border

Two lanes on Highway 407 on the Mississauga-Brampton border were closed to traffic late Monday afternoon after a vehicle lost control on rain-slicked pavement, crashed through a guardrail and wound up in deep grass, police said.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said it’s fortunate there were no serious injuries as a result of the single-vehicle collision, which occurred in the eastbound lanes approaching Mississauga Road at around 3:30 p.m. as “some pretty significant rain” fell in the area.

He added the driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Schmidt said the vehicle spun out, struck the guardrail and then continued on for a good distance in the deep grass next to the toll highway before finally coming to a stop.

“He didn’t roll over, but he certainly went for quite the ride,” the veteran OPP officer said in a short video posted to social media (see below).

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the driver of the vehicle was fortunate to avoid serious injuries.

Video footage showed the upright vehicle well off the highway in the grassy ditch just prior to being pulled back onto the roadway by a tow truck.

Schmidt said police hoped to have both lanes reopened to traffic by about 4 p.m.

The incident should serve as a cautionary tale for other drivers, police said.

“Anytime it’s raining … always be aware of the conditions and how quickly things can change in terms of losing control and not being able to see where you’re going,” said Schmidt.

OPP have also said on numerous occasions that drivers must keep a safe distance between themselves and other vehicles, particularly in rainy weather, and watch out for pools of water on the highway.

“The last thing you need to do is speed through a large pool of water not knowing what lies beneath that water, especially if it’s debris, and the last thing you want to do is hydroplane your vehicle,” police said earlier.
