Police are asking the public for help tracking down a suspect after a driver towing a stolen excavator led cops on a chase through Caledon.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Sunday (April 16), the OPP says officers from the Dufferin detachment saw a white Chevrolet pickup truck towing a mini excavator in East Garafraxa. Police say officers attempted to pull the driver over for speeding but the pickup truck fled southbound on Winston Churchill Dr. to Caledon.

Police say the driver then turned eastbound on Highpoint Sideroad, but police did not pursue the truck out of concern for public safety due to the driver’s speed.

At one point during the chase, police say the driver got out of the truck on Highpoint Drive to unhook the trailer. Police managed to recover the excavator which investigators say had been reported stolen from a worksite in Bradford.

Police say there was a lineup of cars forming behind the suspect vehicle while the suspect was unhooking the trailer, and investigators are asking for help from the public to locate the individual.

The suspect vehicle is described as a white 2005 to 2010 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck. The truck was towing an orange Kubota mini excavator on a tri-axle trailer at the time of the incident.

Anyone with dashcam video of the incident or information on the suspect is asked to contact the Dufferin OPP Detachment at (519) 942-1711 or 1-888-310-1122. You can also provide information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit your information online at www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
