High-speed chase through Oshawa has Clarington man facing multiple charges

A Clarington man who led police on a high-speed chase on Hwy 401 and the streets of west Oshawa Sunday is facing a slew of charges, including dangerous driving, flight from police and impaired driving.

The 33 year-old driver was finally caught after he crashed his vehicle after leaving the road at Stevenson Road and Adelaide Avenue. His breath samples showed 200 mg of alcohol per 100 ml, two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

Durham Police say Central West officers were conducting a RIDE check at Drew Street and Toronto Avenue, which is located right at the Hwy 401 west exit for Ritson Road, when the suspect was asked to pull over. Officers noted an alcohol aroma in the vehicle, prompting the driver to abruptly accelerate away from police and on to the highway at a “high rate of speed.”

The driver then exited the highway at Stevenson Road with police still in pursuit, and fled north, “running red lights” all the way. At Adelaide the suspect’s car left the road and he tried to escape on foot but was quickly captured and taken into custody.

The man has been charged with impaired driving and over .08; flight from police and dangerous operation of a vehicle; and various Highway Traffic Act offences.
