There is a high chance for thunderstorms in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and the GTA today (Aug 21) as Environment Canada predicts strong winds and up to 50mm of rain accumulation.

Meteorologists with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) are tracking an area of low pressure pushing into the southern Great Lakes basin this afternoon.

Along with a cold front pushing in from the northwest, these two features will continue to bring the risk for showers and thunderstorms into the Greater Toronto Area today (Aug 21).

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible due to the main threat of heavy rainfall associated with these storms.

Strong winds may cause loose objects to be tossed and may cause tree branches to break.

There is also the possibility of scattered lightening strikes and small hail.

Residents in the affected area are encouraged to seek shelter indoors if unfavourable weather is approaching.
