Here’s why Mississauga is one of the best fishing and tourist destinations in Canada

Calling all fishing enthusiasts – Mississauga is one of the best fishing destinations in Canada! Whether you’re already a fishing aficionado or you’re just getting into it, you’re invited to join in the Silver Salmon Challenge 2021 sponsored by Tourism Mississauga, and take advantage of their “Reel in a Deal” fishing charter incentive promotion.

You might not know it, but our city is one of the best spots in the country for fishing. Mississauga has two local ports and harbouring marinas where you can launch your boat or book a fishing charter, letting you get far out on Lake Ontario and catch a wide variety of fish that typically don’t come to the shore.

Lake Ontario is home to the best dynamic fishery in all of Canada. Approximately 3.5 million fish, including chinook salmon, lake trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, and coho salmon are stocked into the lake every year – and the chinook grow a lot larger than you might think.

That’s why the annual Silver Salmon Challenge has residents compete to catch the biggest salmon during the ten-week event, running from June 19 to August 28 this year. Last year’s top fish weighed in at a whopping 35 pounds!

The grand prize for the Silver Salmon Challenge 2021 is a massive cash prize of $100,000, as well as top weekly prizes of up to $7,500 cash awarded to the participants that weigh the biggest fish for each week of the challenge. More details about the competition and how you can participate are available at the Silver Salmon Challenge’s website.

The competition is sponsored by Tourism Mississauga, and they’re making fishing in Mississauga even more exciting with their “Reel in a Deal” fishing charter incentive promotion.

When you book a full-day fishing charter in Mississauga with a participating SafeTravels Stamp approved charter company, using the promo code: REELDEAL, you’ll get a $100 prepaid VISA gift card to spend in the city! The promotion runs all summer long from July 2 until August 28 (while supplies last). See website for details.

It’s the perfect opportunity to visit Mississauga, explore and try something new (or for Mississauga residents, enjoy a relaxing staycation without having to leave the city). When you’re not out fishing on the water, there’s no shortage of things to do in the lovely lakeside community of Port Credit.

Explore Port Credit’s best attractions, such as its local parks, lighthouse, and waterfront boardwalk. Then stay the night or a few at The Waterside Inn – this boutique hotel is an ideal spot for travelers.

You could also use your gift card to hit up some of the community’s unique shops – such as CABIN, an old-school men’s shop offering barber services and grooming products, and Old Credit Brewing Company, one of Ontario’s first micro-breweries producing some of the finest beer in the province. Then grab a bite to eat at one of Port Credit’s many restaurants: Blondies Pizza, The Crooked Cue, Archtop Café, and Eva’s Original Chimneys, to name just a few.
