Here’s which schools will be closed in Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, Hamilton, Durham and Niagara should CUPE hold a second strike

Although schools reopened quickly after a two-day education workers’ strike earlier this month, another strike is possible for Monday, Nov. 21. Should workers walk off the job once more, school boards across Ontario–including those in Peel, Halton, Hamilton, Durham and Niagara–are making plans to close to in-person learning.  

The boards will be offering virtual instruction to students should the strike occur. 

As of today (Nov. 17), 55,000 education workers–including custodians, early childhood educators and educational assistants–represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) plan to walk off the job next week if a deal with the Ontario government is not reached. 

Here’s what local boards are planning to do in the event of a CUPE strike:

Region of Peel: Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon

The Peel District School Board

Public school students in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon will close in the event of a CUPE strike and students will participate in synchronous remote learning beginning Nov. 21. 

Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board

The DPCDSB will close all schools to in-person learning. According to a bulletin posted to the board’s website, students will switch to synchronous remote learning on Nov. 21 in the event that a deal between CUPE and the province is not reached. 

Halton Region: Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills

Halton District School Board

According to the HDSB’s website, elementary schools will be open for in-person learning on Monday, Nov. 21 but will transition to remote learning beginning Tuesday, Nov. 22. All students with special education needs will also switch to remote learning on Nov. 22 should a strike take place.

HDSB secondary schools, on the other hand, will continue to be open for in-person learning. On its website, the board says Grade 7-12 schools (Aldershot, Burlington Central and Acton District) will also remain open. 

Halton Catholic District School Board

The Halton Catholic District School Board plans to close all schools on Monday in the event of a strike. According to the board’s website, All HCDSB schools will be closed for the duration of the strike and students will transition to synchronous remote instruction. 

Hamilton

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board says that in the event of a strike, schools will be closed for in-person learning on Monday and will participate in synchronous remote learning until further notice.

Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board

The board says that in the event of a CUPE strike, all Catholic schools will close on Nov. 21. The board says students will transition to online learning.

Durham Region: Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby

Durham District School Board

The board says that should the CUPE strike occur, all schools will be closed and students will transition to online learning. 

Durham Catholic District School Board

On its website, the board says that all school buildings will be closed to all students on Monday if a strike goes forward.

Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board

The board says all schools will close in the event of a strike on Nov. 21. 

Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic School Board

The board says should a strike occur, all schools will be closed on Nov. 21 to in-person learning and all students will transition to remote learning from home.

Niagara Region: Fort Erie, Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Pelham, Port Colborne, St. Catharines, Thorold, Wainfleet, Welland and West Lincoln

District School Board of Niagara

The board says that should a strike occur, all public elementary and secondary schools will close. 

Niagara Catholic District School Board

The board says all schools will close in the event of a strike and students will transition to online learning.
