It is that time of year again — daylight saving starts soon in Ontario.
Despite efforts to end the practice, daylight saving time returns in the province this year and is just over a week away.
This year, the time to move clocks forward one hour or “spring forward” is on Sunday, March 9 at 2 a.m. Daylight saving time ends on Nov. 2 in 2025.
Not all of Canada adheres to daylight saving time — the Yukon, most of Saskatchewan and some parts of British Columbia and Quebec stay on standard time.
Studies show issues associated with the time change include increased hospital admissions, car crashes and stress, according to John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health.
The change can disrupt natural sleeping patterns and impact cardiovascular health, mental health and lower cognitive performance.
With these health issues in mind, the Ford government passed the Time Amendment Act in November 2020 to make the time now called daylight saving time the standard time year-round.
Neighbouring areas in Quebec and New York State would need to pass similar legislation for the bill to be proclaimed into law, and in recent months there have been movements for change.
In October 2024, Quebec Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette launched a public consultation on the time change.
Before taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that he wanted to eliminate daylight saving time as it is inconvenient and costly.
So perhaps 2025 will be the last year for the time change — but for now get ready to lose an hour of sleep on March 9.
