canada tax deadline

Tax season is upon us in Canada.

Canadians are receiving their tax slips and soon enough, the deadline will be here to file your income tax return.

So how much time is left and when exactly is the deadline?

The Canadian government says that for most people, they must file their 2025 income tax return on or before April 30.

Any payment that needs to be made is also due April 30.

“File your return early or before the due date to avoid being charged interest and penalties and to prevent a disruption to your benefit and credit payments,” the government says.

Those benefits include the GST/HST credit and any related provincial credits, the Canada child benefit, and old age security.

“The CRA will charge daily compound interest on any outstanding balance from the day after the balance is due until your balance is paid in full,” the government says.

For those who are self-employed, the deadline could be different.

“If you or your spouse or common-law partner carried on a business in 2025 with business expenditures relating mostly to a tax shelter investment, your 2025 return must be filed by April 30,” the government says.

“Other than those relating mostly to a tax shelter investment, your 2025 return must be filed by June 15.”

However, if someone has a balance owing for 2025, they must still pay it on or before April 30.
