Environment Canada has issued a “rainfall warning” for Hamilton, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and the rest of the Golden Horseshoe area beginning tonight (January 2).

Said the weather bureau, “Rain at times heavy is expected. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.”

The entire Golden Horseshoe area is calling for 30 to 40 mm (1.2 to 1.5 inches) of rain, meaning driving conditions will be poor tonight.

“Rain is forecast to begin tonight over southwestern Ontario and then spread northeastward early Tuesday. The rain will continue for several hours before tapering to showers from west to east Tuesday afternoon.”

Environment Canada is also warning, “Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks.”
