Environment Canada is calling for a two-day heat event in southern Durham Region beginning Thursday, with maximum temperatures of 29 to 31 degrees Celsius.

The heat warning will be in place into Friday with overnight temperatures in the high teens providing little relief. The hot and humid air have already created the environment for deteriorating air quality resulted in an Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category.

Extreme heat affects everyone. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Cooler temperatures return Saturday.
