Residents across much of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Halton, Durham and Niagara regions are being advised to take precautions as a long-duration heat event continues through today.
Environment Canada says daytime high temperatures are expected to reach around 30 C, while overnight lows will remain near 20 C, offering little relief from the heat.
The warning affects communities including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Milton, Burlington, Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Clarington, Hamilton and municipalities throughout Niagara Region.
In addition to the heat, officials say the hot and humid conditions could lead to worsening air quality. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) may approach the high-risk category, particularly for seniors, young children, pregnant people and those with heart or respiratory conditions.
Health officials recommend residents:
- Drink plenty of water, even before feeling thirsty
- Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day
- Seek air-conditioned spaces when possible
- Check on older adults, neighbours and vulnerable family members
- Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, nausea, headache and extreme fatigue
Temperatures are expected to remain elevated throughout the day, with humid conditions making it feel even warmer in many areas.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and air quality reports and take appropriate precautions until cooler conditions return.
