A heat warning is still in effect in Mississauga.

Environment Canada says a prolonged period of hot weather will continue today and through the rest of this week.

Daytime high temperatures in excess of 30 degrees, with humidex values in the high thirties to low forties, are expected for this week. Overnight lows near 20 degrees are also expected through this period.

The weather agency says a slightly cooler airmass may move into the area this weekend, but there is considerable uncertainty.

“Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category,” Environment Canada says.

“Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.”

Extreme heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. Residents are advised to watch for the effects of heat illness, such as swelling, a rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
