One of Hamilton’s most unique sandwich shops is closing its doors.

That’s My Jam posted earnestly on its Instagram account that the business is “just not working the way that it needs to.”

“It’s with a heavy heart that this announcement is being made,” the post from Monday reads. “After countless sleepless nights full of contemplating and strategizing… Unfortunately, the time has come for us to close our doors (at) 51 King William Street.”

That’s My Jam — also referred to as TMJ — opened its doors in the spring of 2021 to a rousing reception. With a 4.7-star Google review, TMJ became an immediate Hamilton favourite.

Some of the more popular sandwiches on the menu include the Apple Butter Turkey Club, Tomato Jam Grilled Beef, Blueberry Swiss Grilled Cheese, and the Peanut Butter and Bacon Banana.

TMJ’s popularity went beyond its food, though. The shop showcased local artists, organized paint nights, and featured drag brunches.

However, TMJ owners AnnMari Massihi-Sharifi and Nikoo Sharifi say the COVID-19 pandemic took its toll.

“We all worked really hard over the last (two-plus) years to hold on, adapt and make it through all the hurdles, hoping to get to the other side,” reads the Instagram post. “We were so optimistic building this store out during the pandemic. An 8-week build-out turned into nearly a year. We held on and kept pushing.”

“Fast forward to now, for one reason and another and another, it’s just not working the way that it needs to. So this week will be our last week open.”

“Hearts are breaking as this is being written. This is far from easy to accept and proceed with,” it continued.

“Often times we were flying by the seat of our pants trying to pivot with this ever-changing environment. Making adjustments as we went on and adapting. You shared your ideas. You rolled up your sleeves to get things done. We wouldn’t have even made it this far without you.”
