Heart of Trent Awards recognizes outstanding staff, faculty at Oshawa event

An academic administrative assistant at Trent University Durham GTA is one of six major award winners at the school’s Heart of Trent Awards held Wednesday at the Oshawa campus.
Cassandra Aked earned the Provost’s Award for Support Staff, an honour awarded to a support staff member who plays a key role in student engagement and retention and who makes a difference through their performance at Trent.
The annual appreciation event celebrates dedication, expertise and hard work of Trent employees at both the Oshawa and Peterborough campuses.
“This event is a genuine celebration,” said Trent president and vice-chancellor Dr. Leo Groarke. “It is an opportunity for our community to gather and recognize the successes and achievements of our dedicated staff and faculty – truly, the heart of Trent – throughout another momentous year.”

Nancy E. Simmons Smith Staff Award of Excellence – for non-academic staff members demonstrating excellence and exceptional commitment to Trent: Dana Capell, Senior Education Developer, Trent Centre for Teaching & Learning

Trent Community Leadership Award – awarded to faculty and staff who make exceptional contributions to the local community in Peterborough or Durham Region: Linda Dsouza, Human Resources & Labour Relations Advisor
Jackie Muldoon Award for Faculty Service: recognizing faculty who have served with distinction in institutional governance roles, provided collegial and effective service to committees, departments and colleges, led program and department renewal efforts, achieved advancements in administrative responsibilities, and advanced the role of faculty in contributing to the academic and overall success of the university and the profession at large – Dr. Susan Wurtele, Associate Professor, Geography and Professor David Newhouse, Director, Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies

Eminent Service Awards, presented annually to individuals distinguished by a track record of outstanding contributions to university life that go beyond the performance of their job or role: Tara Harrington, Associate University Secretary (Senate) and Human Rights Advisor; Barbara Znamirowski, Senior Librarian; Brenda Maracle-O’Toole, Administrative Assistant, Indigenous Studies Ph.D.
