Health Canada has pulled five more types of hand sanitizers off of the market because they might pose health risks.

That brings the total of ‘hand sani’ products that have been recalled since March 2020, at the outset of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, to 35. Three of the latest recalls were due to possible bacterial contamination with Burkholderia stabilis.

Burkholderia stabilis is a member of a group of bacterial organisms called Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) that are potentially highly virulent and multi-drug resistant. The effects of (BCC) vary widely, ranging from no symptoms at all to serious infections. Burkholderia cepacia complex bloodstream infections may result in sepsis and death in some cases.

Here are the latest recalls, and Health Canada’s reasons for doing so.

A full list of recalled hand sanitizers is available on the Health Canada website.
