Mohawk College in Hamilton is introducing an accelerated tuition-free program to train personal support workers to meet the growing demand for workers in the field.

According to a press release issued Monday (June 20), the school said the first students to the program will be welcomed in July and will be ready to join the workforce by the end of the year.

“There continues to be great demand for Personal Support Workers in our community and this program is designed to help address that workforce gap,” said Paul Armstrong, Chief Operating Officer of Mohawk College, in the release.

“People who are looking for meaningful jobs in the health-care sector can use this opportunity as a fast track to their goal.”

Students in the accelerated program can complete their certification in less than 6 months while concurrently receiving the training and experience necessary to care for individuals in their home, retirement or long-term care settings.

The Mohawk College program involves 12 weeks of online learning followed by 8 weeks of full-time paid clinical placements.

The standard PSW programs at Ontario colleges take eight months to complete.

Mohawk’s accelerated Personal Support Worker program includes:

  • No tuition or fees for domestic students
  • Funding for textbooks and other required supplies
  • Online condensed schedule for flexibility
  • Paid work placement in the final three months of the program
  • Graduation with a full PSW credential in less than six months

There are two start dates in the next month, July 4 and July 25, with space still available in both cohorts, the school said.
