Mohawk College in Hamilton has officially been recognized as one of Canada’s most environmentally friendly employers for a decade now.

The college is the only Hamilton employer listed in this year’s Canada’s Greenest Employers list, an editorial competition organized by the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.

Mohawk is one of four Ontario colleges to receive this recognition alongside Durham College, Fleming College and Humber College.

This is the 10th consecutive year that Mohawk College has made it onto the list.

The college was recognized for its 50-plot community garden that’s tended to by over 300 people (including a fruit orchard with 36 trees), honeybee apiaries, pollinator gardens, water bottle filling stations, and its cafeteria recycling and rinsing stations that encourage the use of reusable mugs, containers and cutlery.

Additionally, ongoing programs at the college aim to improve the fuel efficiency of its vehicles and ensure that 75 per cent of its replacement fleet vehicles are hybrid or electric.

“We are grateful that for a decade Mohawk College has been recognized as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers,” said Mohawk President and CEO Ron J. McKerlie.

“The college continues to intensify its climate action efforts, focusing on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and waste on our campuses and on inspiring students to be the sustainability leaders of tomorrow.”

McKerlie says Mohawk’s net-zero certified building, The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation, provides space for students to live and learn while producing more energy than it uses.

Currently in its 16th year, Canada’s Greenest Employers aims to annually recognize employers that “lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations.”
