Hamilton’s McMaster University has once again been singled out as being among Canada’s best universities in Maclean’s 2022 rankings of post-secondary institutions across the country.

Mac ranked 7th out of 15 medical doctoral universities in terms of student satisfaction and 4th overall among Canada’s medical doctoral universities.

To gauge student satisfaction, more than 19,000 university students responded to the publication’s online survey, giving their opinions on professors and staff, residence life, and opportunities for extracurricular activities and experiential education, such as co-op programs.

Students also weighed in on their schools’ handling of sexual assault prevention and promoting Indigenous visibility, as well as access to mental health services.

For sexual assault prevention, McMaster ranked 12th out of 15, 9th for promoting Indigenous visibility and 8th for mental health services.

In terms of student satisfaction, Sherbrooke University in Montreal ranked No. 1.

In the overall rankings of medical doctoral institutions — universities with a broad range of Ph.D. programs and research, as well as medical schools — were ranked based on things like student to faculty ratio, student awards, bursaries and scholarships and total research dollars.

This is the second year that Mac has placed 4th overall. McGill took the No. 1 spot, with the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia rounding out the top 3 for the second year in a row as well.

“McMaster’s position in Maclean’s rankings reflects our commitment to empowering our students to question, discover, learn and collaborate across multiple disciplines and faculties,” said McMaster University President David Farrar on the school’s website.

“To truly address complex problems, you need to look at them from multiple perspectives. That’s what our students, our researchers and our partners around the world do every day, and it leads to more thoughtful, and ultimately more effective, solutions.”

Maclean’s also offered ranking for individual programs and academic areas and again McMaster had a strong showing.

The DeGroote School of Business ranked 9th, the Faculty of Engineering is 6th and the nursing program ranked 5th.
