Mayor from across the GTA and Hamilton want more financial support from senior levels of government to assist with Ukrainian refugees.

Hamilton’s Catholic school board has launched a fundraiser in support of Ukraine and plans to hold a day of prayer for peace in the war-torn country later this week.

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) announced on Tuesday (March 8) that it would be holding a board-wide Day of Prayer for Peace for Ukraine this Thursday.

Additionally, the board said that a system-wide Support for Ukraine campaign has been launched to raise funds for humanitarian aid for those impacted by the invasion.

The Russian assault on Ukraine, which was launched in late February, has displaced close to 2 million people and has killed more than 13,000 to date.

This type of response is what our school board and schools have always done well, said Chairperson Pat Daly in a message on the board’s website.

“More than just relief, we pray it will send a strong message of hope and support to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine during this time of tremendous conflict, uncertainty, and need.”

The board is also encouraging schools to hold a ‘Blue & Yellow’ civvies day on March 10 or March 11 as a show of solidarity for the people of Ukraine.
