Last chance for Hamilton yard waste collection at curbside. Residents will have to deliver yard waste to a Community Recycling Centre.

Residents putting the finishing touches on their yard work before the first snow dumping of the season will have just one more week of Hamilton yard waste collection at the curbside.

The week of Dec. 5 to 9 will be your last chance.

Residents who need to dispose of yard waste will then be required to bring it to a Community Recycling Centre, free of charge. There is a fee if the yard waste comes from a business, however.

Community Recycling Centres are open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Sundays and statutory holidays.

Yard waste is not accepted in the green bin.

Collection dates are determined by Waste Management staff, who monitor waste tonnage data. They say the peak of yard waste placed at the curb was highest in mid-November and is now steadily declining.

Hamilton yard waste collection at the curbside will resume on Mar. 6, 2023, in time for spring clean-up.

“Residents can place their yard waste in a brown paper yard waste bag or an open-top rigid reusable container with handles on opposite sides, clearly marked with City of Hamilton yard waste stickers,” according to the city. “Blue boxes, cardboard boxes and green bins are not acceptable yard waste containers.”

“You can put out an unlimited amount of yard waste on your weekly pick-up day.”

Leaf and yard waste is picked up by a separate collection truck and may not be collected at the same time as your blue boxes, green bin or garbage. The city recommends placing all waste on the curb for collection between 7 p.m. the night before and by 7 a.m. on your collection day.

Check your waste collection schedule.

Meanwhile, the city says Christmas tree collection will not be impacted. Real trees will be collected during the first and second weeks of January on residents’ regular collection days.

Christmas trees can also be dropped off at a Community Recycling Centre.
