Hamilton volunteers no longer have to pay for background police checks

Hamilton volunteers will no longer have to pay to obtain a background police check.
The Hamilton Police Service (HPS) announced Friday (Apr.1) that it has eliminated fees for volunteer Criminal Record Checks and Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Checks. Additionally, individual fees for background police checks related to employment have been replaced with one fee of $50.
In order for volunteers to receive a free background police check, they must present to police a letter from the organization they are volunteering with, explaining that they require Criminal Record and Criminal Record and Judicial Matters checks.
If the background police check is completed online, there is still a convenience fee of $9.95 that is paid directly to the online provider and not the police service.
