Warming temperatures in Hamilton on Wednesday will be the balm before the storms, the federal weather agency says.

Environment Canada has put out a special weather statement for Hamilton, advising residents of a “messy mix of wintry weather beginning late Wednesday.” The forecast highs for the next two days is 7C, but there is a high probability of heavy precipitation.

Hamilton is expected to receive 10 to 25 mm of rain, starting late Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon. On Thursday afternoon and evening, freezing rain mixed with ice pellets is possible.

As temperatures drop, the city is expected to receive snow from Thursday evening through Friday morning. The snowfall amounts are projected to be 4 to 8 cm, but local blowing snow overnight Thursday is also a possibility.

Environment Canada states that road closures are possible and utility outages may occur.

“A low pressure system is expected to track northeast across Lake Erie and Lake Ontario Thursday night which could bring a messy mix of wintry precipitation to southern Ontario,” Environment Canada said.

“At this time the track of the low pressure system is uncertain, and as such precipitation type, timing and amounts may change,” they added.
